Abstract

Introduction: Invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) is essential in the care of critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs), but its use involves risks that can negatively affect clinical outcomes. Objective: To analyze the risk factors associated with IMV in the ICU of the Regional Hospital of Coronel Oviedo, Paraguay. Methodology: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, based on the review of 190 medical records of adult patients admitted during 2023. A structured instrument and descriptive statistical analysis with Stata 16.0 were used. Results: Intrinsic risk factors (advanced age, comorbidities, smoking) and extrinsic risk factors (prolonged intubation, previous antibiotic therapy) were identified. Forty percent of patients died and 60% were discharged alive. Conclusion: Intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors significantly affect the outcome of patients with IMV. The identification and timely management of these factors can optimize safety and prognosis in the ICU.
