Abstract

Introduction: Electronic cigarettes are delivery systems for nicotine and other substances that were introduced to the market with the purpose of smoking cessation. However, their use has increased in the last decade, which represents a great concern since these devices carry health risks and have been related to a specific entity of lung injuries associated with vaping. Objectives: Identify the frequency of use of electronic cigarettes among adolescents in the schools of Pedro Juan Caballero and the reasons for use, as well as the users’ knowledge of their harmful effects on health. Methodology: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study, through the application of questionnaires to adolescents between 15 and 18 years old in public schools in Pedro Juan Caballero with questions about the use of electronic cigarettes and opinions about their consequences. Results: Of the 248 respondents, 41% stated that they had used the electronic cigarette at least once, highlighting a predominance of use at 15 years of age, mainly in females. Furthermore, it was detected that the main reason for use is to “test”. Conclusion: In conclusion, electronic smoking devices are present in the lives of young people aged 15 to 18 in Pedro Juan Caballero, which underlines the need for government intervention to raise awareness about the risks of using electronic cigarettes and prevent future problems. of public health in Paraguay.
