Social references are tools of socialization that allow us to consider similarities and differences in terms of another person, situation or thing, in the process of constituting identity. As part of the social identity, the subject is considered from his singularity on the elements that he has in common with a group or collective, adopting those that are convenient and rejecting those that are dissonant. The possibility of a homosexual identity is centered in the constitution of a sociohistorical image that represents the group, with the intention of becoming visible and to position itself politically and thus to be able to express its demands altogether and in a public way. This research aims to objective to postulate the need to adopt fluid and intersectional identity referents, which propose parameters of group identification, respecting the singularity of each person. We propose a quantitative measurement of the degree of perception of a sample group, both of its identification of similarities and differences, before a homosexual reference subject, constituted from the social, cultural and communication imaginary that is currently held about the people who make up this group, within a Mexican context. From the results of the quantitative measurement, it is concluded that, at least within the Mexican context, most of the characteristics proposed as part of the homosexual identity subject are not significant for the sample group, showing a rejection of being identified with this pattern. Thus, although the homosexual identity referent subject may be convenient for analytical purposes, it is not adequate, since it may restrict the breadth of characteristics of an increasingly broad population with a tendency towards diversity.
