Abstract

Introduction: Ethical dilemmas in critical care challenge nurses to balance patient autonomy with quality of care. Objective: Describe the practices of nursing care in critical units. Methodology: Quantitative, based on a bibliographic review of scientific articles published in the last 5 years. To this end, 50 articles from various scientific databases were selected, which were organized in an analysis matrix that allowed the identification and synthesis of the most relevant findings. Results: The findings underscore the importance of developing ethical competence in critical care nursing, training nurses to address complex ethical dilemmas. Including ethics in educational programs, using case simulations, and offering support from consultants, it is important to form ethical principles, patient rights, and specific protocols. In addition, a work environment that facilitates ethical reflection and supports nurses in ethical decision-making is essential. Conclusion: As part of the objectives of this study, it was found that care practices in critical units require a balance between technical competence and human sensitivity, ensuring not only the clinical stability of the patient, but also their emotional well-being and that of their family. Strengthening training, professional ethics and care management will optimize the quality of care in these highly complex units.
